Summer internships provide an opportunity to play an active part in the life and work of our Tokyo office. We are seeking one to three interns for 10 weeks starting in May or early June. During the program, you will:
- Work within a number of practice groups alongside associates.
- Be able to take part in the office's formal training sessions and workshops.
- Receive continued support and feedback throughout the program.
In addition, we understand the importance of building your professional network. There will be opportunities for you to socialize with our partners and associates at events and activities during your summer placement.
Requirements & Preferences
We look for first-year and second-year students in a Juris Doctor (JD) program, or students in their penultimate year of legal studies in a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) program studying outside Japan to apply for our summer internship.
It goes without saying that we expect academic excellence. Your interest in us already suggests that you probably possess the ambition, drive and determination to live with the demands faced by a high-flying international lawyer.
Language skills are important. To work with our team in Tokyo, you need to be fluent in English as well as proficient in Japanese. The way you think is also crucial. You need to be able to analyze how the law works and be creative, yet pragmatic, in your interpretation of it. In time, your clients will come to depend on your ability to think laterally when resolving a complex issue or structuring an international transaction on their behalf.
From day one you will need to be a team player, and even as an intern, your colleagues will depend on you to perform your tasks accurately, efficiently and on time. Integrity is also part of the equation. It is absolutely vital to the well-being of your clients and the reputation of your colleagues and the Firm that your professional standards are beyond question.
Our focus on smaller teams in which interns play a full role, together with our truly open-door policy, means that you will always be part of the bigger picture. Our interns are encouraged to ask questions and seek feedback at all times. You will never be short of information about the matters you are working on or how you are doing.
Your strength of character is probably evident in the activities that interest you outside the office. You are also going to need a sense of humour.
